Das WLM-System liegt am Rand der Lokalen Gruppe und blieb lange Zeit unerforscht.

WLM liegt im Sternbild {{WP|Walfisch}} fast senkrecht unterhalb der [[Milchstraße|Milchstraßenhauptebene]]. Im [[Halo]] gibt es viele alte und lichtschwache rötliche [[Stern]]e. Im Zentralbereich sind die [[Sonne]]n jünger.
