Als Eiswelt oder Eisplanet werden solche Planeten bezeichnet, deren Oberfläche vorwiegend mit gefrorenen Flüssigkeiten oder Gasen bedeckt ist.
Allgemeines
Befindet sich der Planet am äußeren Rand der habitablen Zone seiner Sonne, sodass die Temperaturen nur relativ gering unterhalb des Gefrierpunktes liegen, können sie auch Leben hervorgebracht haben oder sind für eine Kolonisierung geeignet. In der Regel besteht das Eis auf diesen Welten vor allem aus gefrorenem Wasser.
Auf weit außen in einem Sonnensystem liegenden Welten ist die Temperatur so tief, dass selbst normalerweise gasförmige Substanzen wie beispielsweise Methan in flüssiger Form vorkommen oder sogar die gesamte Atmosphäre gefroren ist und sich auf der Oberfläche niedergeschlagen hat.
